Madrid Airport

Madrid Barajas airport is the largest airport in Europe. It connects the South America and Europe via airlines. Aena Aeropuertos operates Madrid airport. It also operates 47 others at the same time. It is considered as the major international airport of Spain. In 2010, about 49.8 million travelers utilized the Madrid Barajas. This is the Spain’s busiest and the largest among them all. In 2009 this was the eleventh busiest in the world as well as the 4th busiest in Europe. It was opened for use in 1928 and with the passing of time it became Europe’s most important aviation center. Madrid airport is located 9 Km away from Madrid’s financial district and is 13 Km away from the Madrid’s historic center which is situated at the northeast side of Puerta Del Sol.

Madrid to Barcelona air route is the busiest air route in Europe among them all. An air shuttle service of Madrid Barcelona is known as “Puente Aereo” in Spanish.  971 flights operation were made weekly before 2007 but this number of flights had reduced after 2008. The main reason is to open the Madrid Barcelona rail line which maintained high speed.

Passenger number has been increasing day by day. There are 4 terminals to support the huge passengers frequently. These terminals are termed as terminal 1, 2, 3 and 4. A local architect designed main terminal. His name was “Pere Nicolau Bonet”. This main terminal was opened officially on 12th April 1997. Now the airport has 4 modules. They are known as: module A, B, C and D. It can handle about 25 million passengers per year. It has the capacity to handle 12000 passengers in each hour. Madrid airport authority has made a future plan to increase the passenger capacity to 38 million within 2015.

Shop information

A lot of shops and restaurants are there for the refreshment of passengers. You will find there a lot of “Branded” shops within Aldeasa Shops. These shops are popular shopping of wines, cigarettes, perfumes and spirits. You will also find there all other necessaries. All these shops including a pharmacy situated in the passenger area. These shops are open from 7.00 to 23.00.
